Some of our Christmas customers this year were looking for a small, light, and portable instrument called the Melodica.

These were customers of all ages, many of which were buying this great little instrument to help introduce their children to music, use for entertainment on camping trips, and some were university students to play at parties and have some fun.

The demand for the Melodica this year was such that we had to visit our supplier, D’Addario of Canada, several times to keep up with the orders.

So what exactly is a Melodica you ask?  Well it’s an instrument that It is played by blowing air through a mouthpiece that fits into a hole in the side of the instrument.  You press one of the keys and it allows air to flow through a reed. The keyboard is 2 0r 3 octaves.  Melodicas are popular in music education especially in Asia.  The Melodica in its modern form was invented in 1956 by a Brooklyn Musician Joseph Lederfine to teach music fundamentals to children.  Jazz musician Philip Moore Jr. on his 1969 album “Right On” used a melodica.

If you’d like to get your own Melodica, we have several in stock in a lot of great colours; pink, blue, black, and yellow.  This is a great gift for someone who wants a unique instrument to add to their collection, or to experiment with a free reed instrument.

If drumming is closer to your style, don’t miss out on our Bucket Drumming Classes during March Break.  Bucket Drumming is all the craze these days and our own Glenn Gratto is a local expert teacher.

New Years Day is the closest thing of being the world’s only truly global public holiday. 

Rysons’s United Studio has been Teaching, Retailing and Servicing the Niagara Peninsula since 1938.  2011 has been very successful for our students who have progressed in RCM exams, and performed in many concerts.  Some have done cd’s ,served the public in many charity events, joined our many bands learned recording, and successfully broadened their musical education.

The Golden Hammers have just released their very first CD!

The CD was produced at Chaplin Avenue Studios under the direction of Rysons teacher, Dave Tufford.

It’s not only exciting to see the Golden Hammers take their talents to the next level but they’re doing it with a charitable cause in mind.  The Golden Hammers are donating a portion of each CD sale will go to the Niagara Peninsula Children’s Centre (Kids helping Kids foundation).  These guys actually paid for the recording session, cd pressing and artwork all themselves with money earned over the past 3 years playing gigs in the Niagara area.

The CD is called “Sharp Dressed Man” and features the ZZ Top hit, “Sharp Dressed Man”, a few of the other selections are; “Proud Mary” by CCR, “Roll Over Beethoven” Chuck Berry, “Stepping Stone” by the Monkeys, and “How Long” from Blue Rodeo.

There will be a CD Party coming up, date to be announced, but in the meantime you can see the Hammers live at the Niagara Wine festival ( grape and Wine).  They will be on the West Jet stage at Montebello park St. Catharines this  Saturday Sept 17th from 12- 12:45PM.

Rysons Golden Hammers and Rysons Rockin Daisies will be playing a concert for the city at lunch time 11-2.– tomorrow, August 4th . Come one come all.

If you are interested in music lessons this will be a great opportunity to see our students perform and to ask questions of the teachers.

Our Fall Student Registration  will begin the 2nd week of August if you wish to obtain your time for September  Lets get together tomorrow at the Market Square at 11.00  o’clock and meet the  Golden Hammers and Rockin Daisies and help support our local Farmers Market.

Once again the Downtown Car show was very successful. There were about 10,000 people joining us for the annual event on St.Paul Street.  We’d like to thank David Iannandrea, better known as “Dave the Crooner” for taking us back in time and for helping us relive past memories through is fabulous singing and personality.  The band, Normann from Ottawa also gave us a wonderful performance.  Of course we can’t forget our own Golden Hammers, Rockin’ Daisies, Ryson’s Brass Band, The Collegiate Jazz Band, and the wonderful Beth Bartley with her group of fiddlers.  A big bouquet to all!

Alexander George who is 10 just returned from playing a week of instruction at Natalie McMaster.  He is a student of Beth Bartley  and already he is a great little player I can’t wait to hear him when he comes back.

Rysons Students are all being educated to learn, to read music, to  have fun with music, and obtain qualifications that they might need in the future , for collegiate, university or obtain papers for a future  job.

When you’re a child or teenager it’s all about learning to play, and having fun, but when you’ve passed through the school system and want to advance to a musical career, or playing job you’ll not only need the playing experience that you’ll gain at Rysons, but you’ll need your musical credentials and documentation as well.  Each of our students is prepared for the Royal Conservatory of Music Exams and provided with the opportunity to gain the experience of performing live for many events.

It’s time to register for our Autumn Lessons; Violin, Voice, Piano Theory, Therory History, Harmony, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Ukulele, All Brass and Woodwinds Etc., Flute, Sax, Oboe, Bassoon, Trumpet, Saxaphone, and Clarinet.
