Canadian Idol In the Making?
Posted by: | CommentsOver the years, Ryson’s has had the privilege of following some of our music students as they continue their musical education at renowned music institutions like Berklee College.
Some have even achieved stardom and industry notoriety, like James Bryan McCollum of the Philosopher Kings and Prozzak fame.
We always get a little excited when we see one of our music students showing musical abilities and potential beyond their years.
Well right now we’re real excited that one of our vocal students, Natalie Vurro, has won first prize in the the Junior Idol contest. Ok, it’s not the Canadian Idol, at least not yet, but rather the Canal Days Idol in Port Colborne.
The Canal Days Idol competition was open to youth ages two to 21 with three categories; Mini Idol, Junior Idol, Teen Idol, and Senior Idol.
For her win, Natalie received a cash prize, a trophy, and a five song demo recording from a local Niagara recording studio. Pretty exciting!
Natalie, who has been a regular in our Market Square Lunchtime shows in St.Catharines is a vocal student Lauren Gasbarini, who you may also recognize as June Carter Cash in the very popular Johnny Cash Tribute Show, (more about that in a later post).
We all congratulate Natalie on her Junior Idol achievement, and look forward to her next performance on August 21st at the St.Catharines Market Square Lunchtime Show.
Could Natalie be a future Canadian Idol?

Golden Hammers Gain Fans at Fiddle Fest
Posted by: | CommentsFiddle Fest in St. Catharines was treated to a performance by our young “Old Time Rock ‘n Roll” band, the “Golden Hammers”.
These guys, a group of 6 Ryson’s Music students, range in age from 7 to 11 years old. They’re incredibly talented, look the part, and play the part very well.
We formed this group for the Kiwanis Music Festival where they scored 95%!
“Niagara This Week” was so impressed with their performance on Saturday that they have done a feature on the boys.
You can catch their performance on Thursday July 17th, 12:00 noon at the Market Square lunchtime show.
See you there!
A Special Fiddle Fest Prize
Posted by: | CommentsAs a special prize for the Fiddle Fest, Ryson’s donated a very special violin.
A draw ballot was entered for each of the category winners in the contest and a draw made for the winner of the violin.
What made this instrument so special is its color; a beautiful purple. More importantly however it was autographed by Canada’s fiddle star, Natalie MacMaster! When we approached Natalie with our request, she didn’t hesitate for a moment. She was a little reluctant in handing the fiddle back since she really liked it.
The winner of the “Natalie Fiddle” was a group called “No Strings Attached”.
St.Catharines Fiddle Fest a Huge Success!
Posted by: | CommentsThe first annual Fiddle Fest turned out to be a fabulous success. Downtown St. Catharines was packed with over 5,000 attending the event in conjunction with the Downtown Classic Car Show.
We had over 40 contestants from ages 5 to 100 competing in the event which was adjudicated by accomplished fiddlers; Wally Knash, Matthew Johnson and Michael Mattie.
The responses that I’ve been getting about the Fiddle Fest have been very gratifying. This was originally an idea that we thought might attract more people to our end of St. Paul St. during the annual car show. As an added bonus, it would give some of our students an opportunity to perform in public and have some fun competing. Well it not only did all of that. But it did it in a big way. So big that it appears that the dates have been set to do it again next year.
I’d like to thank the St. Catharines Downtown Association for their support of the Fiddle Fest.
Liz Fritshaw – Chairperson, and Trish Poloko – President, were very helpful and supportive through what was a fairly large but enjoyable undertaking. Trish and Liz were very gracious with some very kind words for our participation and presented me with a bouquet of flowers and a plaque. I didn’t expect this but appreciated it very much.
Some of our music students competed in the contest, and did very well. I want to thank them for their contribution and dedication.
Way to go guys…we’re proud of each of you;
Cassandra Swan – 1st /19 to 44 age category
Liz Fanjoy – 2nd / 19 to 44 age category
Tayler Russel – 2nd/ 12 & under category
Brianne Mattie – 2nd / 16 & under category
We’re also proud of Jane Gold who is a student at Ryson’s but chose to enter the Open Step Dance competition. Jane took home 2nd prize! We didn’t teach her to do that…but obviously she’s pretty good!
Beth Bartley, our violin Teaching Director, and one of Niagara’s most accomplished, and renowned musicians competed in her age class and won 2nd prize. (I promised Beth I wouldn’t disclose the age category here).
Beth was pretty much beaming all day as she proudly watched her students perform. She had taught or is teaching about half of the 40 contestants.
The Fiddle Fest was a terrific success and a great experience. If you were there, thank you for your support. If not, you’ll definately want to check it out next year.
Please feel welcome to send me your comments.
