Some of our Christmas customers this year were looking for a small, light, and portable instrument called the Melodica.

These were customers of all ages, many of which were buying this great little instrument to help introduce their children to music, use for entertainment on camping trips, and some were university students to play at parties and have some fun.

The demand for the Melodica this year was such that we had to visit our supplier, D’Addario of Canada, several times to keep up with the orders.

So what exactly is a Melodica you ask?  Well it’s an instrument that It is played by blowing air through a mouthpiece that fits into a hole in the side of the instrument.  You press one of the keys and it allows air to flow through a reed. The keyboard is 2 0r 3 octaves.  Melodicas are popular in music education especially in Asia.  The Melodica in its modern form was invented in 1956 by a Brooklyn Musician Joseph Lederfine to teach music fundamentals to children.  Jazz musician Philip Moore Jr. on his 1969 album “Right On” used a melodica.

Not exactly as shown.

If you’d like to get your own Melodica, we have several in stock in a lot of great colours; pink, blue, black, and yellow.  This is a great gift for someone who wants a unique instrument to add to their collection, or to experiment with a free reed instrument.

If drumming is closer to your style, don’t miss out on our Bucket Drumming Classes during March Break.  Bucket Drumming is all the craze these days and our own Glenn Gratto is a local expert teacher.

That’s it for now.  Hope to see you soon!
Anne.

Valentine’s Day Celebration At Ryson’s

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Valentine’s Day is named for the Christian Martyr Saint Valentine.  Several Traditions that began are sending of cards like “Be Mine” “l Love You” “Lots of Hugs and Kisses” etc., going on a date ,giving flowers and candy and creating or attending romantic dinners. Many couples join together in marriage ceremonies on Valentine’s Day to show their love.

Valentine Symbols:

Cupid was a mischievous winged child whose arrow would pierce the heart of his victims. In ancient Greece he was known as Eros, young son of Aphodite . To the Romans he was Cupid and his mother was Venus.

Roses symbolize both peace and war, Love and Forgivness.  White roses are for true love, Red roses are for passion , Yellow for friendship and Black roses mean farewell.

There are different Valentine’s Day traditions in different countries such as;

  • In Spain it is customary for courting couples to exchange gifts and for husbands to send wife’sa bunch of roses.
  • In Scotland Valentine’s Day is celebrated by having a festival. At the festival there is an equal amount of young unmarried single men and young women who get together and write their name or a made up name on a piece of paper  then roll it up and placed in a hat, one for the men and one for the ladies. They draw a name out of the hat and the young man is to stick with the Valentine who has chosen him. Young ladies would wear the name of the Valentine over their heart or on their sleeve. Their might be a dance, or even a marriage or a romance happen .

Romantic songs are special for Valentine’s Day such as; Everything I Do,  Love me Tender,  Your Are So Beautiful,  I Will Always Love You, The Lady in Red, The Rose,  When A Man Loves A Woman and may more.

Valentine’s Day is also a time of celebration at Rysons!
To celebrate the day of Love we’re having a special sale!

We’ve selected special Red and Pink Instruments and marked them down by 20%.  If your Valentine is a budding musician in need of a new instrument, now is a great time to get a great instrument and save lots of money doing it.

See With Your Heart Remembrance Day

Posted by: | Comments (7)

November 11 is observed as Remembrance Day.

 Why you ask?

Remembrance Day,  also known as Poppy Day,  Armistice Day,  or Veterans Day is a memorial day,  observed in Commonwealth Countries to remember the members of the armed forces who have died in the line of duty since World War 1.

A symbol of respect , the red Poppy is due to the poem;  ”In Flanders Fields”.  The red color of the poppy is an appropriate symbol of the blood spilled in the war. and the many tears shed for the loss of love ones.

See With Your Heart is Remembrance Day Music By a friend Judy Lypka,  Lyrics by Nicole Jowett.  The children that are singing in the video are from Niagara Schools.

See With Your Heart is a song coming from the heart of students to be shared by students.  It is dedicated to Judy Lypkas’ cousin Ernest Cockburn who she never met as he was killed in World War II.

For your enjoyment and appreciation of Judy Lypkas’  talent and hard work please watch the video below and if you’d be so kind, please go to the YouTube video here and leave a comment and wishes for Judy.

A young man named Spencer D’Amore,  who is at present a student at Rysons Music working on his grade 6 Royal Conservatory Trumpet,  is playing “The Last Post” in the video below.  Spencer attends  all memorial services he can and is only 12 years old.  It is so nice to see our young remember our heroes.

Muscially yours Anne Deyme

Christmas Musical Special; Metronome

Posted by: | Comments (1)

METRONOME: Great Gift for Christmas. WEEK ONE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL 15 percent off  Metronomes!

A little history about the metronome: Johann Maelzel started manufacturing the metronome in 1816 under the name Maelzel’s metronome.  Ludwig van Beethoven was the first notable composer to indicate specific metronome markings in his music in 1817.

Where did the name Metronome come from?  It was first heard in England but stems from the Latin metronomous, Metron meaning measure and nomos regulating.

Why should a student use a Metronome?  An obvious answer is to keep rhythm even and clean, keep meter consistent and aides the student in the importance of understanding the sense of the downbeat. It becomes a educational tool for all instruments.

What do Teachers think about Metronomes?  Music Teachers consider the metronome an indispensable tool.  Also, most professional musicians in fact continue to practice with a metronome throughout their career.

Different kinds of Metronomes are as follows; Mechanical, Electronic, Software, and Metronome tracks.

Music Teachers applaud their students when they enjoy the music they play and look for opportunities to improve. The clicking sound of the mechanical metronome is sometimes used to provide a soft rhythm track without using percussion. Paul McCartney did this twice, Once in “Blackbird” in 1968 and on “Flower in the Dirt” in 1989.

Our Metronomes come in all different colors , price range  and shapes  we even have penguins, owls and cats.

Drop in to see our metronomes and receive 15% off!

Come and visit Anna Vogt    Voice and Piano one of Rysons many  teachers who believes strongly in the use of a metronome.

Anna is available to discuss your musical needs please call  905 682-6832  for an appointment voice and piano. or any other teacher for instrument advise.  Rysons.
